There is no doubt that fruits like papaya and pineapple are loaded with a lot of vitamins and minerals and we should encourage to have them in our daily diet. But is it safe to have them during pregnancy? According to medical experts it is better to avoid these fruits during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. I would say just avoid it throughout the pregnancy period.
    • As you know papaya contain an enzyme called papain which takes the form of prostaglandin and oxytocin when we eat it. You would be surprised to know that these ingredients are widely used during abortion!
    • When it comes to pineapple it contains bromelain which is very helpful to treat cough issues. But it can adversely affect your pregnancy when it causes uterine contraction and further complications.
I also read that we should avoid grapes too, but not quite sure about that. It’s still in debate. Some doctors argue that it has a lot of resveratrol on its skin which is mildly poisonous and can adversely affect the baby.

But why should we take a chance?

Really the Doctors need to give out a list to newly pregnant women, that contains everything they should and should not eat or consume during their pregnancy.
I never knew about this but I did do my best to eat as healthy as I could during each of my pregnancies.

My doctor didn't notify me about this but this information sure makes sense. I didn't eat too much if these fruits as I mostly bought apple, bananas, and oranges. Doctors should let their patients know about everything pregnant woman should be careful of for the babies sake.

Yes, it is best to avoid Papaya and Pineapple during pregnancy because of the reasons that OP has given but then why blame the doctor?

Don't doctors advise against smoking and drinking too during pregnancy but who listens? Besides, usually we don't eat these fruits daily nor in large quantities to cause any real harm to be honest.

So unless your life dependent on it occasional consumption during pregnancy won't harm you or the child.

I knew about papaya, but that pregnant women should avoid pineapple as well is something new to me. Doctors never had mentioned to avoid these fruits. Given the risk factors which these fruits could bring in, it should have been told. However, these are not very common fruits to be consumed so even if someone is ignorant about there's little chance of getting impacted.

Your information looks well researched, of a fact I am just getting to know of these. I do know that these food substances contain a lot of vitamins but how they counteract with pregnancy is what I didn't know. First trimester of pregnancy are always a delicate time and one need be careful of the kinds of food or medication taken.

Thanks for this wonderful information. I would definitely tell my wife since we are planning to get pregnant. Might as well avoid it before and until the baby comes out. I haven't read something like this about these fruits. My wife loves pineapple so much.
