This is a tricky issue because it is like teaching your children to be insensitive of the opinion of others. I was a conscious child or maybe you can say vain hence I was always conscious of what others may say of me. With the clothes and footwear, I was very particular not really to be in fashion but to wear a decent attire lest my friends would tease me. My assessment of my behavior then was an over-sensitivity on the environment which caused me to lose self confidence. I only gained self confidence when I got a job.

For the children, I'd say it is better to teach them how to evaluate issues - there are serious matters and there are matters that should be ignored.
